Alexander Wasserman, a 28-year-old Embedded Software Engineer from South Africa, decided a few months ago to steer his career in a new direction. After completing his master’s degree in Mechatronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University, specializing in ‘digital twins’ and Holonic control systems, he soon began exploring opportunities abroad. Together with his wife, they considered building a new life outside South Africa, but the right moment and opportunity had yet to present themselves.

That opportunity came through LinkedIn when Alexander was approached by Yes tech careers. They had an interesting vacancy in the Netherlands and wanted to know if he would be open to exploring it. “It felt right immediately,” Alexander says. “The timing was perfect. We were just starting to look for opportunities abroad, and Yes tech careers made it all very concrete.”

Yes tech careers supported Alexander and his wife throughout the entire process. “They took the time to prepare me for the interviews and helped us with all the practical aspects of the move. From arranging the flight to finding a house, everything was meticulously organized.” Upon arriving in the Netherlands, there was even a bike waiting for him. “It turned out to be an indispensable addition because a bike is essential to quickly feel at home here. Thanks to that personal care, the move felt less like a big leap.”

From coding to harvesting

Now, Alexander works at Dewulf, a leading manufacturer of agricultural machinery, in their R&D department. “I primarily work on the software for potato planters. My tasks include developing new functionalities and debugging systems. The most exciting part is testing our software—sometimes on simulated potato planters and other times on the actual machines in the field. It’s incredibly satisfying to see how our work directly impacts real-world operations. The most impressive part? Creating perfectly planted rows of potatoes—it’s always a beautiful sight to behold.”

Integrating into the Netherlands: Language, culture, and work-life balance

The integration into the Netherlands went smoothly as well. Yes tech careers provided Dutch lessons, which helped Alexander and his wife adapt more quickly. “Initially, there was a small language barrier, but after a few months, I already felt much more comfortable. It really helped me integrate better into the culture and gave me the freedom to connect socially and professionally more effectively.”
He also noticed a significant difference in the Dutch work culture. “In the Netherlands, the balance between work and personal life is taken seriously. It’s great to feel that your personal time is genuinely respected.”

To international candidates considering a move to the Netherlands, Alexander offers one simple piece of advice: “Go for it! You’ll never know how an opportunity might turn out unless you take the leap. Thanks to Yes tech careers, my wife and I have built a new life in the Netherlands, full of opportunities and surrounded by friendly people. They’ve given not only my career but also my personal life a fantastic start.”
